When Breath Becomes Electricity

Nature doesn’t waste energy—it transforms it. And sometimes, it reveals new pathways we never imagined. Where generosity and expression come together, we meet a community of silent partners in vitality—electricity-breathing bacteria.

In places where oxygen is absent—deep oceans, gut linings, and wastewater systems—some microbes are thriving by exhaling electrons. Researchers recently discovered how common bacteria like E. coli manage this feat. By pushing electrons out of their bodies onto surfaces like electrodes, they “breathe” in a whole new way, enabling their survival, growth, and adaptation in dark, oxygen-free zones.

This isn’t just biology—it’s a metaphor.

Like these microbes, we too find ourselves in environments where the usual fuel (sunlight, inspiration, energy) is hard to come by. And yet, within us exists another way—a way to regenerate, adapt, and evolve. These bacteria demonstrate that with the right connections—even in darkness—we can generate life.

Some even begin to thrive more efficiently the longer they stay in contact with their “electrical” environment. That’s not just adaptation—it’s self-expression in its most unexpected form.

Might this be a whisper to your own nervous system?

In the My Brilliant Body model, vitality is the current we either generate or drain. Just like these bacteria, we can learn to grow even in challenging places—especially when we connect, give, and express from within.

These microbes aren’t just survivors.

They’re conductors of possibility.

So are you

It’s worth pausing for a moment to …

acknowledge that life seeks a way to grow even in inhospitable places.

… appreciate how your body strives to survive; regardless of how hostile the environment it may find itself in.

… celebrate opportunities to connect, even in a small way, to help yourself generate vitality.

Happy worthday!
